Lando and Bugoy still screening at the 12th Cinemalaya Film Festival. "The film ( Lando at Bugoy ), based on the true story of Camiguin teacher Silvino Bajao, inspires without preaching. It entertains without trivializing something as delicate as a father and son at odds with each other. "
Lando is 40 years old, a high school dropout who now earns a living by carving tombstones (called "lapida" in the vernacular). His rebellious teenage son Bugoy is a delinquent student who would rather smoke and drink with his gang. One day, Lando decides to go back to school and becomes Bugoy's classmate.
In the end, Lando at Bugoy takes pride at its simple goals and remains to be a pleasant film to watch. But on a Cinemalaya competition-level which has a theme of “Break the Surface”, this is the vanilla pick among the selections. At its best, Lando at Bugoy does not engrave to the soul, it only scratches its surface.
Full-length features at the 12th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival of the Cultural Center of the Philippines include "Lando at Bugoy" by Vic Acedillo Jr. and "Dagsin" by Atom Magadia.
This is a premise that is easily wasted in tacky, by-the-numbers filmmaking in the spirit of 1990s mainstream Tagalog movies—but Lando at Bugoy is steadfastly simple, and thereby conserves its own worth. It is helpful to consider the story’s most peculiar character, Lando’s father (and Bugoy’s grandfather), played by Roger Gonzales.
Directed by Vic Acedillo. With Allen Dizon, Jerould Aceron, Roger Gonzales, Rachel Anne Rosello. Disrespected by his teenage son, a 40-year-old high school dropout tries to solve this problem by returning to school which only makes his son hate him even more. Amidst the struggle between them, an unexpected event changes everything.
Watching Lando at Bugoy is like a breather in this festival at it seems to be so simple and restrained. Touching story plus great actors equals a good film. The story behind Lando at Bugoy is more inspiring than the film itself. It's the kind of can do miracle that reminds us all that anything can happen and everything is possible.
